Windows 8 introduced much awaited features such as multi-core processor and multiple screen resolution support, removable memory card support, USB Mass storage mode, DivX/XviD video playback support, NFC support, Bluetooth file transfers, Kid's Corner, etc.

In October 2012 Microsoft released a major update to the mobile OS. The launch schedule is yet unannounced by Microsoft. It should carry over some of the new features of Windows Phone 8 down to the lineup of previous smartphones, as those would not be updated to Windows 8. Reportedly, a Windows Phone 7.8 update is in the works. Other new features include the capability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot and flip-to-silence. Windows Phone 7.5 TangoĪnother update followed in 2012, dubbed Tango, which lowered the minimum hardware requirements for the smartphones essentially allowing Windows Phones at lower price points. The update brought the frequently requested multi-tasking for third-party apps and added the updated Internet Explorer 9, Twitter integration and Windows Live SkyDrive access. The next major update – Windows Phone 7.5 Mango – saw the light of day in May 2011. It was later launched in October the same year. The initial announcement of Windows Phone 7 came in February, 2010. In 2011 Nokia announced it has chosen Windows Phone as the OS for all its future smartphones providing a solid backing for the fledgling OS and in the same time betting all of its mobile phone business on its success.

Microsoft licenses the software to third-party hardware manufacturers, but keeps a stringent list of minimum requirements for the hardware it runs on to ensure the best user experience. Windows Phone introduced a new design language, previously called Metro UI, but later renamed to simply Modern. Remember, check Microsoft's own update page to see if Lumia Denim is ready for your phone! You can find that site here: Phone is a proprietary mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. As to why it takes so long for CV Lumias to get the update, seeing as there are no carriers in the way, your guess is as good as ours.
That is all there is to it! So hopefully you can now have a better understanding of why your phone is not yet getting an OS update, even though you see other Lumias that are getting one. Update: You can decipher the region codes through Microsoft's website, found here: /en-US/OEM/docs/Customization/Registry_values_for_carrier-unlocked_phones Finally, my other Lumia 930 is DK-IS (Denmark) but with a Mobile Operator listed as 000-33, which may be a developer version. Denim is not yet available for those phones, unfortunately. This version of the phone is commonly sold through retailers worldwide.
My Lumia 930 and Lumia 735 though are listed as CV GBIE, which translates to 'Country Variant, Great Britain, Ireland'.
#Lumia os versions upgrade
Sure enough, checking for an upgrade (Settings > Phone Update) does confirm one is available. Checking Microsoft's Update page reveals that the Lumia Denim update is available for my device. This information suggests this is a Hong Kong variant of the Lumia 1320.
